D'où les tentatives effectuées pour essayer de copier en radiothérapie externe le mode d'irradiation continue de la curiethérapie par une irradiation à faible débit pendant plusieurs heures par jour et, plus récemment par une irradiation hyperfractionnée.

OBS

Le fractionnement est le nombre de séances de radiothérapie pour délivrer une dose totale. Le fractionnement dit classique est de 10 Gy par semaine en 5 séances. D'autres fractionnements peuvent être utilisés, mais il faut toujours considérer que, à dose totale égale, des doses supérieures par séance augmentent l'effet radiobiologique.
