Pour déterminer la répartition du poids du skieur sur ses skis, on trace, à la verticale, une ligne virtuelle à angle droit depuis le point milieu entre la talonnière et la butée des fixations sur ses skis. Si le poids du skieur, debout, en flexion ou en extension, est également réparti, on le dit en «position intermédiaire»; s'il est majoritairement dans la portion avant du ski (vers la spatule), on le dit en «position d'avancé(e)» ou «position avancée»; s'il est davantage dans la portion arrière du ski (vers le talon du ski), on le dit en «position de recul». Dans un cas comme dans l'autre, le skieur doit prendre ces positions alors qu'il contrôle bien ses skis sinon, la position d'avancée ou celle de recul peut l'entraîner dans une chute.
