Thermal transfer ribbons are technical products. Unlike dot matrix and typewriter ribbons that can be used in nearly every printer, thermal transfer ribbons are manufactured in various formulations. These specific formulations (wax, wax/resin and resin) must be compatible with specific label stocks and printer specifications.

Contrairement aux rubans pour matrice de point et pour machines à écrire qui peuvent être utilisés avec presque toutes les imprimantes, les rubans transfert thermique sont fabriqués sous diverses formules. Ces formules spécifiques (cire, cire/résine et résine) doivent être compatibles avec les étiquettes autoadhésives spécifiques ainsi qu'avec les spécifications de l'imprimante.
