Record 1 2015-10-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geology
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Water Pollution
DEF

The material transported by water from the place of origin to the place of deposition.

OBS

In water courses, sediment is the alluvial material carried in suspension or as bed.

OBS

sediment: term and definition standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Domaine(s)
  • Géologie
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
  • Pollution de l'eau
DEF

  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
DEF

sediments; subhydric soils: Soils and their parent material beneath the surface [of a] water body.

OBS

sediment; subhydric soil: The plural form of these terms ("sediments" and "subhydric soils") and the plural definition have been standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Key term(s)
  • sediments
  • subhydric soils

Domaine(s)
  • Science du sol
  • Mécanique des sols
  • Érosion et corrosion (Géologie)
DEF

Record 3 2008-04-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance
DEF

Matter composed of particles which fall by gravitation to the bottom of a liquid.

CONT

Because turbine engines have high fuel consumption rates, contaminants accumulate in them rapidly. Fine sediment in the fuel may block the engine fuel supply system and erode critical parts in the engine and fuel control systems.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Aérotechnique et maintenance
DEF

Record 4 2000-06-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geology
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
DEF

Solid fragmental material that originates from weathering of rocks and is transported or deposited by air, water, or ice, or that accumulates by other natural agents, such as chemical precipitation from solution or secretion by organisms, and that forms in layers on the Earth's surface at ordinary temperatures in a loose, unconsolidated form; e.g. sand, gravel, silt, mud, till, loess, alluvium.

CONT

Broadly speaking, sediments can be divided into two great groups, allochthonous deposits and autochthonous deposits. The allochthonous deposits are those which were transported into the environment in which they are deposited. ... The autochthonous sediments are those which form within the environment in which they are deposited.

OBS

sed: ... abbreviation ... used in drilling reports.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géologie
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
DEF

Record 7 1996-06-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
DEF

Material collected by sedimentation of a solution in a centrifuge tube.

CONT

At a relatively low speed, large components, such as nuclei and unbroken cells, sediment rapidly and form a pellet at the bottom of the centrifuge tube; at a slightly higher speed, a pellet of mitochondria is deposited; and at even higher speeds and longer periods of centrifugation, first the small, closed vesicles and then the ribosomes can be collected. All of these fractions are impure, but resuspending the pellet an repeating the centrifugation procedure several times removes many of their contaminants.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sciences biologiques
DEF
