Ces couches, surtout lorsqu'elles sont fines, sont souvent groupées en petites successions ou «séquences lithologiques», du type a-b, a-b, ou a-b-c, a-b-c, [...]. Ces récurrences sont souvent appelées «cycles», terme auquel on préférera celui de «rythmes» sauf dans les cas assez rares, où la succession des termes est strictement récurrente et symétrique.

Forma de ordenamiento interno característica de una serie estratigráfica consistente en una sucesión repetitiva de elementos litológicos que sigue una norma general que es posible establecer. Según ciertos autores puede emplearse como sinónimo de ciclo, secuencia o ciclotema.

Este análisis inicial, o de campo, de la serie [estratigráfica] puede ser representado en la columna como sucesión continua o por medio de alguna de las formas de ordenamiento interno características, como son las secuencias, ritmos y ciclos a las diferentes escalas, tanto del estrato como de la serie e incluso hasta del orden de la cuenca.

OBS

No existe un acuerdo entre los diferentes autores sobre la nomenclatura en el estudio de las series rítmicas. Así, los términos secuencia, ritmo y ciclo son utilizados para describir hechos diferentes, o bien como sinónimos.
