[...] une argile [...] subit avec plus ou moins d'intensité l'action du métamorphisme. Ceci se traduit par une déshydratation progressive, la perte des propriétés de l'argile (plasticité, porosité), puis la formation de minéraux nouveaux à partir des constituants de la roche en même temps qu'apparaît la schistosité. La suite des faciès ainsi obtenus, en supposant que la recristallisation s'effectue sans apport étranger à la roche originelle [...], constitue la séquence argileuse ou séquence pélitique.

Toutes les roches n'ont pas la même aptitude au feuilletage; ce sont celles de la série argileuse qui se clivent le plus facilement en donnant des feuillets plus fins et plus réguliers que ceux de toutes les autres roches.
