Le buffet bas que l'on place à l'office ou à la cuisine apparaît au XVIIIe siècle comme en témoignent certains tableaux de Chardin. Il comporte alors deux portes moulurées surmontées de tiroirs en ceinture. C'est sous cette forme qu'il se répand dans les provinces françaises, souvent agrémenté de sculptures telles que rosaces, fleurettes, épis, coquilles ou éventails.
