Un principe fondamental de la physique statistique est que l'état d'équilibre d'un système isolé, d'énergie totale E, peut être décrit en faisant la moyenne de toutes les configurations possibles de même énergie E. L'idée sous-jacente est qu'au cours du temps le système va évoluer selon sa dynamique propre, et visiter ainsi toutes les configurations dont l'énergie est celle fixée au départ. Ce principe porte le nom de théorème ergodique.
