En opposition avec les magmatistes, une fraction importante des spécialistes a adhéré à la théorie d'une formation du granite par diffusion de substances chimiques dans le milieu solide (ou pour mieux dire : milieu cristallisé). Le milieu se serait trouvé «granitisé» par métasomatose sans passer par un état liquide. C'est la théorie «transformiste» ou «métasomatiste».
