Proximity tourism refers to a particular form of tourism that emphasises local destinations, short distances and lower-carbon modes of transportation. Yet, proximity tourism is not only about distance – it is a form of tourism that is built upon the idea of seeing proximate, everyday surroundings anew.

Le tourisme local est un moyen qui permet de se dépayser et de (re)découvrir sa propre ville ou région. Sa principale spécificité est qu'au lieu de partir en vacances dans une autre région, voire dans un autre pays, les touristes restent dans un rayon de 100 km autour de leur lieu de résidence. Si le tourisme de proximité est surtout pratiqué pour les sorties et week-ends en famille, il est aussi possible d'en faire pendant les vacances.
