The concussion attending the breaking up of masses of ice.

In those events, gigantic blocks of ice, typically with a mass of about a gigaton (1 gigaton equals 1 billion metric tons), break free and produce glacial earthquakes that generally register magnitude 5 on seismometers as far away as New York or the Midwest in the United States.

Ce sont les mouvements violents et soudains du glacier ainsi que ses sursauts qui provoquent ce que les chercheurs nomment dorénavant des «séismes glaciaires» au sein même de la glace. La genèse de ce type de séismes est bien différente de celle des autres séismes, d'origine tectonique [...] Les chercheurs précisent que ces séismes glaciaires ne peuvent se produire que lorsqu'un énorme bloc de glace se détache du glacier, le poids de la glace pouvant atteindre la gigatonne (109 tonnes), soit un milliard de tonnes.
