Il est essentiel avant de percer les trous, de mesurer la profondeur du minage projeté. Les trous devront atteindre la même profondeur que la saignée et ne pas être dirigés hors de la coupe projetée. Ne percer chaque trou que d'une profondeur suffisante pour équarrir le front de taille et ne pas placer les trous trop près des côtés.
