A test used to detect root tension in patients with back pain. As the straight leg raising test is performed and pain relieved by knee flexion, firm pressure is applied by the fingers into the popliteal space, which will reproduce the pain in a positive bowstring test.

Atopic dermatitis. This chronic, eczematous condition of the skin is often associated with a personal or family history of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic eczema. Pruritus is prominent, and the consequent scratching and rubbing lead to lichenification, most typically in the antecubital and popliteal flexural areas. The eczema usually manifests itself after the first few months of life, appearing on the face and extensor areas of the extremities as acute and subacute, red, vesicular and oozing dermatitis.

A femoral-popliteal bypass graft is the favoured treatment for occlusive disease of the superficial femoral artery. Usually, the patient's own long saphenous vein is used for the graft, a technique known as autogenous bypass grafting. Conventionally, the vein is dissected out from the groin to the knee, and its tributaries ligated. The vein is then reversed, so that the valves do not obstruct the blood flow, and joined to the common femoral artery above and the popliteal below.
