Echinochloa frumentacea originated in India, and possibly also in Africa. It is grown for grain, fodder, and beer, although not as extensively as in the past. It is found occasionally in the contiguous United States and southern Canada, the primary source being birdseed mixes.

El mijo japonés [...] es una especie anual, alta, robusta, de 60-120 cm de altura. Se cultiva como cereal en los trópicos y subtrópicos. Sembrada durante la temporada lluviosa, alcanza la madurez en 6 semanas, aproximadamente, con buenos rendimientos de un forraje bastante basto. Exige, para dar buen rendimiento, suelos fértiles y húmedos, pero bien drenados. Crece vigorosamente, tolera inundaciones temporales y, algunas veces, puede pastarse ya tres semanas después de sembrada. [...] En los arrozales y algodonales es a veces una mala hierba. Es apropiada para ensilar, pero excesivamente suculenta para la henificación.
