C'est en 1960 qu'a été fabriqué le premier robot industriel utile. À ce moment, deux voies sont apparues; d'une part, les industriels qui avaient des besoins, d'autre part les scientifiques qui venaient de découvrir l'intelligence artificielle et qui cherchaient à concevoir le robot universel. Dans ce deuxième cas, les scientifiques ont mis vingt-cinq ans pour s'apercevoir que la piste suivie était la mauvaise. Cette piste consistait à tenter de faire comprendre à un robot son environnement via des systèmes de vision et de l'interprétation d'images avec des techniques d'intelligence artificielle.
