HYDROTREATED VEGETABLE OIL [1 record]

Record 1 2012-02-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Biomass Energy
DEF

[A biofuel] produced by hydrogenating vegetable oils or animal fats.

CONT

Hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO) are paraffinic hydrocarbons similar to gas-to-liquids (GTL) and biomass-to-liquids (BTL) diesel fuels. ... HVO can be used as blending component in diesel fuel or as pure fuel. When used as fuel on its own, significant reductions in NOx [nitrogen oxide] and particulate emissions can be seen. Thus, HVO is very suitable as diesel fuel for urban traffic like city buses. HVO processes can also be modified to produce jet fuel. Greenhouse gas (GHG) savings by HVO use are significant compared to fossil fuels.

OBS

Hydrotreating has been developed in recent years as an alternative vegetable oil processing technique for producing biofuels ... Hydrotreated vegetable oil is a synthetic biofuel which – as well as biodiesel – can replace conventional diesel fuel. However, the new biofuel has some major technical advantages when compared to biodiesel – amongst other regarding its combustion. Here, hydrotreated vegetable oil shows lower emissions than biodiesel, e.g. regarding NOx.

OBS

In the HVO production process, hydrogen is used to remove the oxygen from the triglyceride (vegetable oil) ...

DEF
