One of the earliest blade coaters was the pond or puddle-coater .... In more recent designs, the blade is separate from the applicator, leading to the designation of trailing blade coater.

Les coucheuses à lame [...] sont en général des coucheuses à rouleau dans lesquelles la quantité de couche est réglée par une lame de métal souple, plutôt que par un ensemble de rouleaux. Les coucheuses à lame traînante [...] sont de deux types : à lame de type à cuve [...] et à lame inversée [...] La première se compose uniquement d'un cylindre caoutchouté et d'une lame en forme d'auge s'appuyant sur la feuille de papier. La seconde comporte un rouleau enducteur, suivi d'une lame raclant et égalisant la couche avant que la feuille ne quitte le rouleau support.
