Potency testing is an important part of the evaluation of cellular therapy products. Potency assays are quantitative measures of a product-specific biological activity that is linked to a relevant biological property and, ideally a product's in vivo mechanism of action.

Les chercheurs commencent toutefois à disposer de technologies capables d'accélérer considérablement ce processus de criblage. Par exemple, les tests d'activité biologique ne se font plus sur des animaux entiers, mais sur des cellules ou même des parois cellulaires. La nature de l'activité des extraits peut ainsi être évaluée très finement, parfois jusqu'au niveau d'un récepteur ou d'une enzyme.
