AMPLITUDE DISTORTION [10 records]

Record 1 2016-12-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Acoustics (Physics)
DEF

Additional tones subjectively perceived by the ear when more than one tone is applied, and having frequencies which are sums and differences of the frequencies of the applied tones. Combination tones arise because of amplitude distortion in the ear.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Acoustique (Physique)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Television (Radioelectricity)
DEF

A sawtooth waveform, recurring at line frequency, introduced into the picture signal to compensate for inherent amplitude distortion in the camera output.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Télévision (Radioélectricité)
DEF

Record 3 2003-09-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Radioelectricity
  • Audio Technology
  • Telecommunications Transmission
DEF

Distortion whereby the linear relationship desired between the input and the output of a system is not fully achieved.

OBS

Specific types of non-linearity distortion are :amplitude/amplitude distortion, harmonic distortion and intermodulation distortion.

Key term(s)
  • non linear distortion

French

Domaine(s)
  • Radioélectricité
  • Électroacoustique
  • Transmission (Télécommunications)
DEF

Record 4 2002-02-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Software
  • Telecommunications Transmission
DEF

Amplitude distortion in which the output and input signal envelopes are disproportionate(in the absence of spurious frequencies).

CONT

The effects of multipath distortion are dramatically illustrated when one listens to or watches colour TV as an airplane passes between the transmitter and the receiver. Here either noise or distortion is heard from the FM receiver and the colours wash out on the TV set. A similar effect, called linear distortion is observed on wire communications systems.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Intelligence artificielle
  • Logiciels
  • Transmission (Télécommunications)
DEF

Record 6 1989-09-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Radar, Radio Guidance and Goniometry
DEF

An apparent target in a radar which does not correspond in position or frequency or both, to any real target, but which results from distortion or misinterpretation by the radar circuitry of other real target signals which are present. For example, it may result from range-Doppler ambiguities in the radar waveform used, from intermodulation distortion due to circuit amplitude nonlinearities, or from combining data from two antenna systems or waveforms.

CONT

The [DFM] meter indicates the distortion factor, which is the ratio of the rms total distortion to the amplitude of the fundamental frequency, including harmonics.

OBS

A common measurement is total harmonic distortion (thd) where the fundamental of a very low distortion sine-wave test signal is removed by a steep notch filter. The summed harmonics that remain are then measured as a voltage of the fundamental at the required test power of the amplifier. (When measured in this manner the term thd is not really correct since the distortion also has the amplifier noise added to it within the test passband. The correct term is distortion factor). (GRAEL, 1977, p. 326).
