AMPLITUDE RATIO [14 records]

Subject field(s)
  • Remote Sensing
CONT

As SAR [synthetic aperture radar] is a coherent imaging system two forms of change detection may be considered, namely incoherent and coherent change detection. Incoherent change detection identifies changes in the mean backscatter power of a scene typically via an average intensity ratio change statistic. Coherent change detection on the other hand, identifies changes in both the amplitude and phase of the transduced imagery using the sample coherence change statistic.

DEF

A measure of the rate of decrease of amplitude in a damped oscillation.

CONT

It is equal to the ratio of one amplitude to the next in the same direction. It is also equal to the logarithmic decrement divided by the periodic time of the oscillation. In an electrical resonant circuit the damping coefficient is related to the circuit constants, being given by R/2L where R is the series resistance in the circuit and L is the inductance.

CONT

Energy spectroscopy. For energy analysis the output current pulse from a PMT [photomultiplier tube] or from a semiconductor detector is often applied to a charge-sensitive preamplifier. The preamplifier produces a voltage pulse with a peak amplitude that is proportional to the total charge in the current pulse, which is proportional to the energy absorbed from the incident radiation. Amplifiers and filters are used to expand the range of the peak amplitude and to shape the signal from the preamplifier, a process that maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio for the system. For energy analysis the peak amplitude of the shaped pulse represents the information of interest. Discriminators and single-channel analyzers(SCA) can be used, following the signal shaping system, to determine the presence of certain energies of detected radiation. A discriminator produces an output logic pulse if it's input signal exceeds a preset threshold level. An SCA produces an output logic pulse if the peak amplitude of it's input signal falls within the energy window that is established with two preset threshold levels.

DEF

A form of quadrature phase shift keying where the quadrature component of the signal is offset from the in-phase component by half a symbol period.

OBS

As a result the amplitude does not cross zero, and this reduces the peak to average ratio. This has advantages for power amplifiers because it reduces the peak to average ratio and as a result it is used in the reverse link for CDMA [code division multiple access] transmissions.

DEF

A frequency-modulation detector circuit that uses two diodes and requires no limiter at its input; the audio output is determined by the ratio of two developed intermediate-frequency voltages whose relative amplitudes are a function of frequency.

CONT

A ratio detector... is a discriminator operating on the same principle as the Foster-Seely discriminator but less sensitive to amplitude modulation. The coupling circuit and the addition of the primary voltage to the center tap of the secondary may be identical to the corresponding portion of a Foster-Seely discriminator. However, in the ratio detector, the two diodes are connected so that their load voltages are additive rather than subtractive.

The [DFM] meter indicates the distortion factor, which is the ratio of the rms total distortion to the amplitude of the fundamental frequency, including harmonics.

OBS

A common measurement is total harmonic distortion (thd) where the fundamental of a very low distortion sine-wave test signal is removed by a steep notch filter. The summed harmonics that remain are then measured as a voltage of the fundamental at the required test power of the amplifier. (When measured in this manner the term thd is not really correct since the distortion also has the amplifier noise added to it within the test passband. The correct term is distortion factor). The Turam method [of electromagnetic exploration differs from the Sundberg method] in that the ratio of field intensities at two points is observed rather than the intensity at a single point. As with the Sundberg method, two frequencies within the 100-to 800-Hz range are employed. A cable several kilometers long is laid out as a source parallel to the expected strike and is grounded at both ends. Measuring coils are read in pairs along lines perpendicular to the cable, the spacing between them generally being about 25 m. In-phase and out-of-phase ratios are observed as well as amplitude ratios and phase-angle differences.
