English

Subject field(s)
  • Inhabitant Names and Names of Peoples
DEF

Coming from, of, or having to do with the Northwest Territories or its people.

OBS

In English, the noun and the adjective have the same spelling, though the adjective never takes the form of the plural.

OBS

People of the North: A name given by the Ministry of Information of the Northwest Territories (Yellowknife), the translation of the Eskimo word NUNATSIARNUIT.

OBS

Northwester: Having to do with a native of or resident of the Northwest Territories, the early administrative districts which became Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1905.

OBS

Nor'Wester: A shortened version of "North-Wester" (several variants); historically, having to do with a North West Company (NWC) agent, wintering partner, employee or servant; a trader or "engagé" who winters in the hinterland; or a veteran of these experiences. The noun can also be used adjectively to refer to the NWC and its employees. "Nor'Wester" may have to do with a native or resident of the Northwest Territories, usually non-Indian, but in the literature of the fur trade the term is usually associated with the NWC and its members.

OBS

Territorian: [A term linked to the name of the] resident of the Northern Territory, Australia.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Noms d’habitants et noms de peuples
DEF
