Accumulation aiguë de gaz de fermentation dans le rumen des ruminants par suite d'une accélération des fermentations ou d'un défaut d'éructation. La production des gaz est quasi continue chez les ruminants, leur évacuation également. Si la production de gaz augmente (aliments fermentant facilement) ou si les éructations cessent, on assiste à une distension de la panse et un cercle vicieux est installé; plus la panse est distendue moins il y a de chance pour que le gaz puisse sortir par l'œsophage.
