La série de satellites Métop est l'élément central du Système polaire d'EUMETSAT (EPS), qui sera réalisé en partenariat avec l'Agence spatiale européenne. Les Métop graviteront sur des orbites quasi-polaires héliosynchrones, à une altitude de 840 km, en effectuant environ 14 révolutions par jour. Ils emporteront des versions des instruments opérationnels embarqués sur les satellites NOAA (États-Unis) correspondants, et une charge utile complémentaire composée de nouveaux instruments européens.
