Importés d'Afrique du Sud au Brésil en 1956, les essaims d'Apis adansonii ont non seulement occupé les ruches vides mais aussi envahi les ruches peuplées et anéanti les colonies d'origine européenne. De plus, des croisements eurent lieu dont le résultat fut une africanisation des abeilles du Brésil suivi de l'envahissement de l'Amérique du Sud par des abeilles hybrides considérées à présent comme un fléau au point que, depuis 1965, au Brésil, un décret prohibe l'élevage des abeilles africaines.

OBS

Ne pas confondre avec «abeille africanisée» qui est un hybride obtenu par croisement à partir de l'abeille africaine.
