A cannabinoid receptor antagonist for the adjunctive management of obesity in individuals with a BMI [body mass index] of 30 kg/m² or more, or in individuals with a BMI above 27 kg/m² in the presence of other risk factors such as type 2 diabetes or dyslipidaemia.

Rimonabant, as a selective CB1 receptor [cannabinoid receptor 1] endocannabinoid blocker, is believed to act in two areas: the brain, where it reduces hunger, hence promoting weight loss; and in adipose tissue, where it increases levels of adiponectin, the cytokine secreted by fat tissue.
