Fréquemment, les transformations radioactives B[bêta] ou α[alpha] sont suivies par l'émission d'un ou plusieurs rayons y[gamma]. Le rayonnement [gamma) est un rayonnement de nature électromagnétique analogue aux rayons X mais de longueur d'onde généralement plus courte. Ainsi les transformations des noyaux radioactifs s'accompagnent de l'émission de rayons a[alpha], B[bêta], y[gamma); c'est la détection de ces rayonnements qui permet de mesurer la radioactivité d'un matériau ou d'un objet.
