ANOXIA [3 records]

Record 1 2020-06-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Water Pollution
DEF

A condition where dissolved oxygen in the water column is totally depleted ...

CONT

Phosphorous is a fertilizer that induces plant growth and algae and was also found in many commercial detergents at the time. Plants began growing, dying and decomposing in Lake Erie, creating anoxia (severe deficiency of oxygen) at the bottom of the lake and leaving the water's surface putrid and mossy. The lack of oxygen killed fish and other aquatic species, and the smelly surface repelled anglers, tourists and those living around Lake Erie.

OBS

Anoxic conditions can develop in a lake bottom when oxygen is depleted by decomposition processes. This often happens in eutrophic lakes and can result in fish kills.

  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
  • Pollution de l'eau
CONT

Record 3 2003-09-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Biology
  • Soil Science
  • Drainage and Irrigation (Agric.)
DEF

The absence of oxygen.

CONT

When the growing root tip of intact corn seedlings is subjected to hypoxic stress (3% 0), within as little as 2 hours it rapidly develops improved tolerance of environments completely lacking oxygen (anoxia). Crop plants commonly encounter hostile environments of hypoxia and anoxia, for example following heavy rains, and these stresses often cause reduction in yield - even complete loss of the crop.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Biologie végétale
  • Science du sol
  • Drainage et irrigation (Agriculture)
CONT
