Dans les lacs les plus acides, il y a mise en circulation de quantité importante de métaux qui vont soit s'accumuler dans le chaînon primaire (dose sublétale), soit produire une baisse supplémentaire de la diversité, accompagnée d'un ralentissement (dose sublétale), ou un arrêt de la production primaire (dose létale). L'action des éléments toxiques est complexe à cause de la présence simultanée de plusieurs éléments (Ni, Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd ...) entraînant des effets additifs, synergétiques ou antagonistes différents au niveau de chaque espèce.
