The major windows are the visible window, from 0.3 to 0.9 m; the infrared window, from 8 to 13 m; and the microwave window, at wavelengths longer than 1 mm. La figure ci-dessous représentant la transmittance atmosphérique montre que si l'atmosphère est relativement transparente dans le domaine du visible (400 nm - 700 nm), elle ne laisse passer le rayonnement que dans un nombre limité de bandes spectrales dans l'infrarouge. Les régions du spectre utiles pour la télédétection sont celles qui sont peu affectées par le phénomène d'absorption atmosphérique.
