A surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf, due to retrocochlear hearing impairment.

CONT

The ABI is reported to enhance lip-reading skills as well as providing an awareness of environmental sound, although the ABI usually does not result in good levels of hearing.

CONT

Les implants du tronc cérébral permettent de transformer les signaux analogiques enregistrés par un microphone en signaux électriques pour stimuler directement le noyau cochléaire. L’implant du tronc cérébral a bénéficié des technologies développées pour l’implant cochléaire, la stimulation se faisant dans ce cas sur le noyau cochléaire, et non sur les cellules ciliées.

CONT

Les implants du tronc cérébral ne réhabilitent toutefois pas l'audition, mais ils permettent de donner à la personne qui en bénéficie quelques sensations qui facilitent notamment la lecture sur les lèvres (lecture labiale).
