Certains brûleurs fonctionnent en semi-automatique, une vanne magnétique placée sur l'arrivée de fuel étant pilotée en «beaucoup ou peu» par un thermostat (régulation tout ou rien). Un fonctionnement entièrement automatique est également possible. Il y a dans ce cas préchauffage électrique de la coupelle puis allumage et extinction automatiques par thermostat.
