The feedback properties described above, particularly the property of constant self-renewal, give living systems unique characteristics. These characteristics are defined by scientists in the concept of "autopoiesis". Autopoietic structures lie at the highly sophisticated end of nature's spectrum of "open systems". The spectrum runs from simple self-organizing systems like whirlpools and Jupiter's Red Spot to more complicated chemical dissipative structures like the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction and finally to highly complex autopoietic systems such as ourselves. 1, record 1, English, - autopoiesis

3, record 1, French, - autopoi%C3%A8se

The phenomenon of autopoiesis is quite general. It can apply to systems existing in any domain in which we can identify unities and components. An autopoietic system holds constant its organization and defines its boundaries through the continuous production of it components. If the autopoiesis is interrupted, the system's organization - its identity as a particular kind of unity - is lost, and the system disintegrates (dies). An autopoietic system that exists in physical space is a living system. 2, record 2, English, - autopoiesis

2, record 2, French, - autopoi%C3%A8se
