Dans toutes les spirales [normales], les bras prennent naissance en deux points opposés, à la périphérie du noyau. Mais il existe aussi des galaxies, moins nombreuses, où une barre nébulaire rectiligne s'étend diamétralement de part et d'autre du noyau qu'elle semble embrocher. C'est aux extrémités de cette barre que naissent brusquement les deux bras de la spirale. Hubble subdivise ces "spirales barrées" en 3 classes désignées par les symboles SBa, SBb et SBc [...]
