Bien que le principe soit très différent de celui des mémoires à disques, on retrouve l'idée d'un support mémoire simple, formé de couches continues, et d'un adressage séparé de ce support, ce qui laisse espérer une réalisation économique. Le progrès est dans la mobilité du faisceau d'électrons utilisé pour l'adressage : le support mémoire ne bouge pas, le temps d'accès est de quelques dizaines de microsecondes.
