Préservées par l'absence d'oxygène et les composés antimicrobiens des sphaignes, des centaines de ces étranges momies ont été retrouvées dans les zones humides d'Irlande, du Royaume-Uni, d'Allemagne, de Hollande et particulièrement du Danemark.
