Sonic boom produced by a supersonic aircraft creates a "boom carpet" 50 to 80 miles (80-130 km) wide along the flight path of the plane. The noise is heard wherever the conical shock wave intersects with the ground.

Le Bang sonique (...) est provoqué par les ondes de choc qui accompagnent l'avion dès que la vitesse du son est dépassée. Ces ondes s'accumulent sur une nappe de choc, sorte de "sillage" dont la forme ressemble à un cône dont l'axe serait la tangente à la trajectoire et le sommet l'avion lui-même.
