A teletext system transmits a variety of text and graphics messages such as airline schedules, supermarket sales, stock market information, weather reports, and other types of information to an ordinary television receiver.

Videotex is the generic term for systems which retrieve and display text information on modified television: viewdata ... is one method. An alternative method is teletext ... in which pages are broadcast on otherwise unused television lines. Since teletext is a one-way system, with limited capacity for information and relatively long retrieval times, it is less suitable for computer-assisted learning.
