Dès l'éclosion de l'œuf, la jeune larve d'ouvrière baigne dans de la gelée royale qui est sa nourriture exclusive durant trois jours. À partir du quatrième jour, les nourrices lui donnent une bouillie larvaire composée de pain d'abeilles (pollen fermenté), de miel et d'eau, à un rythme de 200 visites par jour, jusqu'à operculation. Cette bouillie est enrichie de sécrétions, de sucs digestifs et d'un peu de gelée royale.
