L'injection d'érythropoiétine à un animal hypertransfusé et dont ni la moelle ni la rate ne contiennent de précurseurs érythropoiétiques identifiables entraîne une vague de proérythroblastes : l'érythropoiétine agit donc in vivo sur des cellules indifférenciées morphologiquement, appelées ERC (erythropoietin responsive cells).
