In order to determine the requirements of paper used to make bags and sacks, a number of investigations were carried out in North America and Europe to find out how paper sacks fail. The results showed that tensile energy absorption (TEA) is the critical parameter when a full sack is dropped on end (butt drop). For flat drop resistance, both TEA and tear strength should be at a high level.

Un grand nombre d'études ont été effectuées en Amérique du Nord et en Europe pour trouver la cause de la rupture des sacs, et déterminer les propriétés que doivent avoir ces derniers. L'ensemble des résultats révèlent que l'énergie à la rupture est un paramètre fondamental pour les sacs pleins qu'on jette debout. Les sacs qu'on jette à plat sont résistants si à la fois l'énergie à la rupture et la résistance au déchirement sont élevées.
