La combinaison d'une hyperphosphatémie marquée et d'une concentration plasmatique en calcium normale ou normale basse aboutit à l'élévation du produit phosphocalcique. Lorsque celui-ci dépasse 5 en mmol2, il existe une tendance à la précipitation du phosphate de calcium dans les tissus mous, artères, articulations, muscles et viscères. Ce processus est appelé «calcifications métastatiques» et lorsqu'il est très sévère et aboutit ou entraîne une ischémie tissulaire «calciphylaxie».
