The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) was created in 1968, in replacement of the Bureau of external aid, which existed then within the Department of External Affairs. The Agency was mandated to coordinate and implement the Canadian development assistance for poverty reduction in the world. On June 26, 2013, CIDA and the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade merged. The department was continued under the name "Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development."

L'Agence canadienne de développement international (ACDI) vit le jour en 1968, en remplacement du Bureau de l'aide extérieure, qui existait au sein du ministère des Affaires extérieures. L'Agence avait pour mandat de coordonner et mettre en œuvre l'aide canadienne au développement pour la réduction de la pauvreté dans le monde. Le 26 juin 2013, l'ACDI et le ministère des Affaires étrangères et du Commerce international ont fusionné. Le ministère a été maintenu sous la dénomination de «ministère des Affaires étrangères, du Commerce et du Développement».
