Les plus anciennes cartes nautiques conservées, liées à l'usage de la boussole, sont de facture génoise ou vénitienne et datent au plus tôt de la fin du XIIIe siècle. Elles représentent généralement le bassin méditerranéen («Mare nostrum»), avec un dessin cartographique d'une précision étonnante, eu égard aux moyens techniques dont disposaient les cartographes à cette époque.
