Les signaux cellulaires passés au crible. Chaque cellule baigne dans un environnement comportant de multiples signaux chimiques : molécules émises par d'autres cellules (hormones, facteurs de croissance, neurotransmetteurs...) et molécules exogènes, telles que les médicaments ou les substances toxiques. Elle parvient pourtant à distinguer ces signaux moléculaires, grâce à un processus qui constitue sans doute l'une des inventions les plus extraordinaires du vivant : la signalisation. En captant et en «traduisant» un signal, la machinerie de signalisation permet à la cellule d'y répondre spécifiquement, par la synthèse ou l'activation d'une protéine, par exemple.
