Cell-wall constituents account for a considerable proportion of the dry matter of grasses, particularly at mature levels of growth. Most of the energy derived by the ruminant from mature grass is obtained from the volatile fatty acids produced by fermentation of structural carbohydrates in the rumen.

Le maïs fourrage est considéré comme la plante de stock incontournable pour l'alimentation des ruminants. Sa valeur alimentaire est essentiellement liée à la digestibilité des constituants de la paroi cellulaire. La teneur et la structure des lignines, ainsi que les relations entre la lignine et les autres constituants pariétaux sont les principales composantes influençant la digestibilité des parois des fourrages.
