The meteorological services in Japan were started in 1875 at the Tokyo Meteorological Observatory (TMO) established in the Ministry of Interior. TMO was given the new name, the Central Meteorological Observatory (CMO) in 1887, which was placed under control of the Ministry of Education. In 1956, CMO became an external organ of the Ministry of Transport and was renamed the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). JMA is reponsible for contributing to the improvement of public welfare including natural disaster prevention and mitigation, safety of transportation, prosperity of industries, and international co-operation activities.
