A light perforated metal box that contains material to absorb, filter, or detoxify poisons and irritants in the air and is used with gas masks.

CONT

Chemical Cartridge and Canister (gas mask) Respirators. ... The basic difference between a cartridge and a canister is the volume of sorbent it contains. The sorbent volume of a cartridge is small and its useful life is short, especially in areas of high gas or vapour concentration. These cartridges are limited to low concentrations and short exposure periods. However, canisters have more sorbent and can be used at higher gas concentrations or for extended periods under lower gas concentrations.

OBS

Not to be confused with "absorber head" (in French: "absorbeur"), which refers to the portion of a rebreathing anesthesia circuit that contains carbon dioxide absorbent, a specific term.

Masques antigaz. Ce sont des masques recouvrant toute la face [...] reliés directement ou par l'intermédiaire d'un tuyau souple à un réservoir contenant un granulé sorbant capable de retenir les vapeurs ou les gaz contre lesquels on veut se protéger. [...] Il est très important de choisir convenablement les réservoirs filtrants en fonction des conditions d'exposition envisagées [...] Les boîtes filtrantes fixées au masque assurent une protection de durée relativement courte, en raison de leurs petites dimensions, et ne doivent pas être employées dans des atmosphères où la concentration du contaminant dépasse 0,5 % (en volume).

OBS

La boîte filtrante (ou bidon, réservoir) est plus grosse que la cartouche chimique (en anglais : «cartridge») et elle est reliée à la pièce faciale par un tube (et non fixée à cette dernière, ce qui est le cas de la cartouche).
