Hydrogen chloride and inorganic chlorides are introduced into the troposphere by volcanic emissions, by seaspray evaporation and by human activity. Removal of these compounds by rain is so rapid that their concentrations decrease rapidly with altitude. Molecular chlorine (Cl2) escaping from industrial processes is also rapidly removed by chemical processes in the atmosphere.

Chlorine [is] an element that is found in biological tissues as the chloride ion. The body contains about 100g of chloride and the average diet contains 6-7 g, mainly as sodium chloride. Free chlorine is used as a sterilising agent e.g. in drinking water.

Used also as a flour bleaching agent and as an aging and an oxidizing agent.

The catalytic agent is atomic chlorine, [symbol] Cl, which is released when stable chlorine compounds are disassociated by short wavelength UV, in the middle and upper stratosphere above 25 km.

Agent anti-microbien, présent dans les emballages, le chlore a de très nombreuses applications. Cependant, comme tout outil à la disposition des hommes, il présente des effets indésirables que l'on doit s'efforcer de limiter.

chlore : Si on fait exception du chlore atmosphérique, où il est à l'état atomique, le chlore se retrouve généralement à l'état moléculaire, soit C12, d'où l'emploi de ce terme pour désigner aussi, de manière elliptique, le chlore à l'état moléculaire.
