La migration doit être suivie d'un lavage prolongé de la plaque pour éliminer les faux arcs de précipitation, puis d'un séchage et d'une coloration par le bleu de Coomassie ou le noir amidon afin de visualiser certains arcs très fins. Des réactions d'identité peuvent être effectuées comme par la technique d'Ouchterlony, en disposant les puits en quinconce.
