Au contraire des chloritoïdes, principalement ferro-alumineuses, les clintonites sont surtout à tendance calcaro-magnésienne. Elles sont également dures, mais en fonction de l'orientation optique, d = 3,5 [...] à 6 [...] La masse spécifique atteint 3,15; elles sont toutes de teinte brune, certaines atteignant le brun très vermillon [...]; n = 1,65 [...] Les clintonites sont des minéraux de schistes chloriteux, ou même de métamorphisme de contact au sein des séries magnésiennes ou calcaro-magnésiennes.
